In Loving Memory
Being born of multiple generations in Key West often means there are endless stories to tell of days old in the islands, stories passed down generation after generation, stories that can often lead to specific intersections, old haunts, secret fishing spots, even something we take for granted, like power lines.
For Rafael, these details are his life. Around every corner tells a different tale of the village it took to raise the young artist. When his father passed very young, Rafael was cared for not just by Mother, Grandparents, Aunt, Uncles, friends and teachers, but the very Island itself.
“This is my home, I am Key West and Key West is me, and I never want to leave.”
It was the same for his father, Rafael Tony Medina Sr, who was quite well-known around the island and a highly respected and beloved journeyman lineman for City Electric, now Keys Energy Services. Medina Sr. dedicated his life to, as our artist Rafael says, “powering the islands that he loved”, before his passing at a very young age in the early 1980’s. Many lower Keys locals remember Medina Sr. fondly to this day, his early passing was a significant loss for the community. But his legacy is never forgotten.
On December 12, 1987, City Electric System dedicated the new Stock Island Generation Facility as the “Medina Line Building” in memory of Rafael Tony Medina Sr.
“I didn’t really get a chance to know him, but I know the stories. Everyone wanted to work with my dad, they all wanted to be on his team when they went out, ‘cause they knew he always had their backs, he cared about them like family, they were his guys and they loved him for it.”
To this day, many within the Medina family have been or are currently Florida Keys linemen, long lives the legacy. Rafael’s Uncle, Philip Medina, also a lineman from the early days, survived an incredible shock of electricity while on a job, taking the power from Marathon to Key West through his body.
Every once in a while, Rafael will paint a tribute to these unsung heros, lovingly and respectfully connecting together the memory of his father, the brotherhood of linemen, and the citizens who depend on them.
The Linemen Series is an incredibly unique subject for any artist, but is truly one of Rafael’s favorites.
“When someone sees one of these paintings and they say, ‘Hey, that’s me, or that’s my dad, or my brother’ , and you can see how emotional it can be for them, like it is for me. It’s such a great connection.”
